Five Black and Hispanic teens who were falsely convicted of raping a white jogger in Central Park, New York, in 1989 filed a defamation lawsuit against Donald Trump on Monday, citing remarks he made during the U.S. presidential debate last month.
The defendants, who are commonly referred to as the Central Park Five, were released from jail in 2002 after serving five to thirteen years, thanks to fresh DNA evidence and another person’s confession.
During his debate with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris on September 10, Trump, the Republican contender for president, made a false claim that the Central Park Five had committed murder and entered a guilty plea.
Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron Brown, and Korey Wise filed the case, opens new tab, in federal court in Philadelphia, calling Trump’s claims “demonstrably false.” Salaam is now a member of the City Council of New York.
On Monday, a Trump campaign official referred to the action as “just another frivolous, election interference lawsuit, filed by desperate left-wing activists.”
Trump’s comments “cast them in a harmful false light and intentionally inflicted emotional distress on them,” according to a statement from Shanin Specter, the plaintiffs’ attorney.
In the case, Specter denied any political motivation. “I’m not making political remarks. “We are going to a court of law to seek redress,” he stated.
In addition to punitive penalties, the plaintiffs are requesting undisclosed monetary damages for emotional and reputational harms.

Trump’s remarks regarding the Central Park Five have already received criticism. He raised awareness of the case and placed a full-page ad in many New York newspapers advocating for the resumption of the death sentence following the jogger’s assault.
In 2019, Trump refused to provide an apology and maintained his previous remarks regarding the Central Park Five.
In September, Trump requested that a U.S. appellate court overturn a $5 million judgment that found him accountable for the sexual assault and defamation of author E. Jean Carroll.
In January, a separate jury ruled that Trump must pay Carroll $83.3 million for defaming her and harming her reputation in June 2019, following her initial accusation of rape.
