On this page you will read detailed information about Over the Last Two Months, Lawyers Have Paid $27 Million For Kamala Harris.

To assist Vice President Kamala Harris in defeating former President Donald Trump in upcoming contentious election, lawyers spent out another $27 million.

According to the most recent batch of Federal Election Commission records, the reliable fundraising group raised almost $27.4 million for the former California attorney general between August and the end of September.

Sullivan & Cromwell senior chair Rodge Cohen and Cravath’s presiding partner Faiza Saeed contributed $250,000 and another $250,000 to Harris’ PAC, known as the Harris Victory Fund, during that period. Brad Karp, chairman of Paul Weiss, gave $25,000 to the Harris Victory Fund in September.

Requests for comment from Saaed, Cohen, and Karp were not immediately answered.

The money that has been flowing in behind lawyers’ enthusiastic support for Harris is made clear by the most recent FEC records. In July, Karp participated in a Wall Street-heavy Zoom call with about 50 well-known Democratic supporters that strategized support for her.

In August, Cohen participated in an event that featured Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and a fundraiser lunch.

It is not new for Harris to support Trump in this way. During the first ten days of the vice president’s presidential campaign, lawyers contributed more to her than to Trump in almost two years.

Trump’s Support Is Declining

During the same time period, Trump’s PAC, the Trump 47 Committee, followed a trend of not receiving any contributions from attorneys or self-identified lawyers.

Attorney donations to Trump have decreased since the beginning of the year. In contrast to their Harris-supporting peers who have hurried to bolster Harris’ campaign finances, Trump’s Big Law supporters have been far more subdued about their backing. Trump-supporting lawyers fear negative consequences, such as alienating clients and messing with their firms’ bottom lines.

In presidential elections, lawyers have traditionally contributed more to Democrats than to Republicans, and they have done so significantly more in recent years. However, Big Law has only given Trump a modest amount of support.

In April, Norm Champ, a partner at Kirkland & Ellis, gave over $88,000 to the Republican National Committee and another $100,000 to the Trump 47 Committee. In May 2024, Michael DeSombre, a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell and a former ambassador to Thailand, gave $50,000 to Trump’s committee. In June, Stuart Alderoty, the chief legal officer of crypto firm Ripple and a fierce critic of the US Securities and Exchange Commission, gave $300,000 to the Trump 47 Committee.

Outside of the legal community, Trump is receiving backing from other wealthy donors. A super PAC that is funding Trump’s efforts to get out the vote in battleground states received $75 million from Elon Musk.
